Should You Repair or Replace Your Grill? An Honest Checklist

We're in the restoration business, so you'd expect us to say "restore everything." We don't. Some grills are genuinely worth saving and some aren't — and the difference usually comes down to three things: the frame, the firebox, and the build quality of the original grill.

What's cheap to fix (almost always worth it)

These are wear items — designed to be replaced. A grill that "doesn't work" very often just needs one or two of them, and the total cost is a fraction of a comparable new grill.

  • Igniters and electrodes
  • Flavorizer bars and heat shields
  • Grates
  • Control knobs
  • Grease trays and catch pans
  • Regulators and hoses

What's usually worth fixing on a quality grill

  • Burner tubes — moderate cost, big impact on performance
  • Heavy grease and carbon buildup — a deep cleaning issue, not a fatal one
  • Dulled or spotted stainless exteriors — polishing restores most of it
  • Surface rust on carts and shelves

When replacement usually wins

This is where build quality matters. A ten-year-old premium grill with a solid cast-aluminum or stainless firebox is often a great restoration candidate. A three-year-old budget grill with thin steel and rust-through usually isn't.

  • The firebox or cook box is rusted through
  • The frame or cart is structurally compromised
  • It's a budget grill where parts cost more than the grill is worth
  • Multiple major components have failed at once on a low-end model

The two-question test

One: is the firebox solid? Two: was the grill a quality model when new? Two yeses almost always mean restore. A no on either one and you should at least price a replacement.

The option most people miss

If your grill isn't worth fixing, it may still be worth something. We buy select quality grills in Orange County for restoration — even ones their owners were about to haul to the curb. And if you're replacing, a professionally refurbished grill from our marketplace often beats a new budget grill at the same price.
